Our friend

Our Friend Sandy is the most personal project I’ve ever worked on.

This docuseries has been in development for a while, and I’m finally getting ready to take it into production. I created this page to share what the project is about, why it matters to me, and how you can follow along as it comes to life.

The story behind Our Friend Sandy started with something my dad told me—something I never expected to hear. In 1986, Harold “Sandy” Cohen, who was a close friend of my dad and a former City Commissioner in Covington, Kentucky, went missing. It was a high-profile case at the time, covered heavily in the news. But the emotional journey his friends went through—the real story behind the headlines—has never been told. Until now.

This project is about more than just what happened. It’s about friendship, loss, identity, and what it means to show up for the people you love. Sandy was a gay, Jewish man serving in public office in 1980s Kentucky. That alone tells you how much strength he had to live authentically. But beyond the politics and the headlines, Sandy was a son, a business owner, and a deeply loved friend.

Our Friend Sandy is my attempt to honor him—and the people who never gave up on him. We’ve already begun filming and collecting interviews, and I’m incredibly proud (and a little nervous) to be taking the next steps.
